NY-NJ moves toward interoperable chassis pool with new IEP

The Port of New York and New Jersey has moved closer to its long-term goal of getting a portwide gray chassis pool to handle cargo surges from mega-ship calls with the addition of a second intermodal equipment provider (IEP) — and perhaps a second location — to the pool, which was opened last year by Flexi-Van Leasing and the North American Chassis Pool Cooperative (NACPC). The addition of Milestone Equipment Holdings to the OPEN Choice Equipment Agreement-North East (OCEA-N) pool — would take the pool a step closer to its goal of creating an “interoperable” pool that would combine the chassis from several providers, meaning that truckers could pick or drop off chassis from more than one provider at one or more locations. Interoperability is generally seen as a way to enable truckers to pick up or deliver rental chassis more efficiently and quickly.
