After ending 2020 with record-breaking volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey, the trend continued in the new year with January 2021 as the seaport experienced double-digit growth in cargo activity and the highest January on record for volume.In January, the seaport moved 721,284 TEUs (400,400 lifts) compared to 617,024 TEUs (349,196 rail lifts) in January 2020, a 16.9 percent increase. Rail volume increased 12.2 percent from the previous year’s monthly figure, totaling 68,880 containers for January 2021.

The Port of Seattle Commission approved funding for two key programs to help speed economic recovery and sustainability projects. Fourteen organizations serving South King County communities have been recommended to receive nearly $218,000 in Port of Seattle environmental grants, while the Economic Development Partnership program was approved for up to $930,000 slated for cities in King County. Cities will use the funding to boost local recovery efforts including help for impacted small businesses.

EPA flags changes to how lead emissions are regulated in Port Pirie

The Environment Protection Authority is set to make substantial changes to the way lead emissions are monitored and regulated in Port Pirie. Earlier this week, community leaders agreed a concerted effort was needed to reduce lead levels in the South Australian town, following a report by the ABC’s Background Briefing program. The EPA is in the process of reviewing the Nyrstar-owned smelter’s operating license, a process that occurs every two years. EPA director of regulation Peter Dolan said it was moving to tighten up the existing license conditions.

On Tuesday, June 18, the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) expanded their electric vehicle fleet with the help of the Clean Fuel Transition Fund for Public Fleets, which is managed by the Regional Planning Commission’s (RPC) Clean Fuel Partnership program…In this case, the funding provided by the program was used to offset the cost of adding two plug-in hybrid electric Ford F-150s equipped with regenerative braking and a high voltage lithium battery along with other extended range technology. These systems, developed by XL – a company dedicated to proving fleet electrification solutions – help to reduce the vehicle’s miles per gallon by as much as 50 percent and decrease the vehicle’s emissions by as much as a 33 percent.

Finnish lifting equipment company Konecranes has secured an order from long-term US customer Port Houston to supply the facility with eight Konecranes rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), complete with hybrid power packs. The cranes, the first Konecranes hybrid RTGs to be delivered, will arrive at the Texan port’s Barbours Cut Container Terminal in the first quarter of 2020, with the order set to be booked in the fourth quarter of this year.

…Puget Sound Energy, the gas and electric utility serving communities on Washington state’s Puget Sound, issued a construction contract two years ago for its gas liquefaction plant, storage tank and marine fueling depot. It has an anchor customer lined up to take liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel. It has a 25-year tidelands lease on 33 acres in the Port of Tacoma, which will earn the port $212,000 per month after the plant starts-up. It has all its major permits but one. While construction continues on the $310 million project, the utility is waiting for the final environmental impact statement, or EIS, required for an air quality permit. The permit delay already has pushed back the plant’s anticipated start-up date from 2019 to 2020.
