EPA flags changes to how lead emissions are regulated in Port Pirie

The Environment Protection Authority is set to make substantial changes to the way lead emissions are monitored and regulated in Port Pirie. Earlier this week, community leaders agreed a concerted effort was needed to reduce lead levels in the South Australian town, following a report by the ABC’s Background Briefing program. The EPA is in the process of reviewing the Nyrstar-owned smelter’s operating license, a process that occurs every two years. EPA director of regulation Peter Dolan said it was moving to tighten up the existing license conditions.
