NY-NJ port expands barge strategy

Port and government officials are escalating their commitment to handle rising cargo volumes by increasing the use of cargo-carrying barges in and around the Port of New York and New Jersey and to other North Atlantic ports with the creation of an advisory committee to research and promote moving cargo by barge. The committee, known as the North Atlantic Marine Highway Alliance, is the latest effort by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and New York City officials to stimulate barge use and reduce truck traffic and the pollution and congestion it creates. The alliance will look to promote barge use from Maryland to Maine.
