Dark clouds of soot that spew from diesel-fueled trucks and coal-fired power plants had for years been a major reason why New Jersey’s air was among the most polluted in the nation. But aside from lung and heart disease, scientists in recent years have shown that soot — or black carbon — has another damaging effect. It is a major contributor to global warming — a short-lived pollutant, but second only to carbon dioxide in its ability to trap heat.
