GCT New York, after struggling to retain cargo volume seven years ago as larger terminals at the Port of New York and New Jersey expanded their capacity, is riding a rebound. And as cargo volumes through the port rise, the Staten Island facility — which is operating at approximately half of its capacity — is positioned to build on a 50 percent surge in cargo it has seen over the last three years.

Best Transportation is the first trucking company to move a container from the Port of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) using an electric vehicle. The company, headquartered in Port Newark, New Jersey, picked up a container in Maher Terminal, also headquartered in the port, and delivered the container to a Costco Wholesale location within New Jersey without incident. This was the first time the zero-emission vehicle had been used by Best Transportation and marks the first step in Best Transportation’s plan to increase the number of electric vehicles in its fleet.

SSA Marine, Tritium and Stäubli Electrical Connectors are teaming up to provide automatic charging stations for over 30 soon to be electric terminal tractors at the Port of Long Beach in California to create the largest automated electric vehicle charging programme of any port in the US. A total of 33 diesel-powered tractors will be retrofitted with all-electric drivetrain systems by SSA Marine, which manages the terminal at the Port of Long Beach. Tritium will install its Veefil-PK 175kW DC High Power Chargers (HPCs) to power the fleet.

LA cuts emissions by reducing vessel speeds

The Port of Los Angeles has recognised 28 shipping lines for their participation in its Vessel Speed Reduction Program (VSRP) to help decrease operational emissions. This is an air quality and annual incentive programme for vessel operators who reduce their speed as they approach or depart the port. In 2018, 174 companies participated in the programme, with more than 3,000 combined vessel calls that aided in the decrease of emissions from ocean-going vessels. 589 ships attained the 100% VSRP compliance within the 20 and 40 nautical mile zone.
