Wilmington NC Sets Record for Largest Container Ship Arrival

The North Carolina State Ports Authority set a record for the largest container ship to call at the Port of Wilmington. The YM Warranty with a carrying a capacity of 14,220 TEUs arrived in Wilmington on October 26. It is also the largest class vessel calling on the US East Coast. Completed in 20189, the YM Warranty measures 1,200 feet in length. Registered in Panama the ship was built by Imabari Shipbuilding and is part of a class of five Ultra Large containerships recently introduced by the line. The ships operate under charter from Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.

Government funding is helping a port in the United States expand its rail capacity. The Port of Virginia is using the US$20m federal grant to part-fund its US$44m project to double the size of the on-dock rail yard at Norfolk International Terminals (NIT).“The amount of cargo we move by rail, mainly to the Midwest, is growing and is important to the users of this port and our overall success, so it must keep pace with the other improvements we’re making at NIT,” said John F. Reinhart, chief executive and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority.

According to data released by the Port of Long Beach for September, trade was up 12.5 percent compared to the same period in 2019. The port moved 795,580 TEUs to establish a new best month record exceeding its prior best in July 2020 by nearly 42,500 TEUs. Total volume for the third quarter was up over 14 percent versus the year-ago to nearly 2.3 million TEUs topping the previous record set during the third quarter of 2017 by nearly 160,000 TEUs.

According to the Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), the Danish-Swedish joint venture that operates the ports of Copenhagen and Malmö, Sweden, it will contribute to the project, storing and distributing captured CO2 contributing to the city of Copenhagen’s goal of becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral capital city.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has announced that the largest airport electric bus fleet on the east coast, comprising of 36 buses and 19 chargers, is now fully operational three months ahead of schedule at Newark Liberty, John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports.In 2018, the PANYNJ became the first public transportation agency to embrace the Paris Climate Accords and pledged to take aggressive steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The PANYNJ pledged then to convert its airport shuttle buses to all-electric buses by the end of 2020.

Container volumes have rebounded sharply, consistent with the elimination of most “blank sailings.” In August, the Port returned to 2019 levels, setting a new all-time monthly container record, including a new record for intermodal rail volume. At almost 65,000 lifts, the port-wide intermodal ExpressRail system handled 7.8 percent more volume than August 2019, with overall rail volume up 1.4 percent year-to-date through August 2020.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced Tuesday that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $1.9 million grant to the Pemiscot County Port Authority, Caruthersville, Missouri, to make port harbor improvements needed to protect against future flooding and encourage additional business development. The EDA grant, to be located near a Tax Cuts and Jobs Act Opportunity Zone, will be matched with $207,943 in local funds, and is expected to create more than 60 jobs and generate $11 million in private investment.
